Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt was on in the evening shift as nurse, so she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of an elementary school student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
